Impacts of climate change, sea-level rise, and coastal hazards such as storms, flooding, and erosion (especially U.S.)
- Relevant work focuses on community- and state-level responses to coastal erosion, flooding, sea-level rise; ability to adapt to climate change impacts
- Geographically, my research has focused on Hawai’i, California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Great Lakes shorelines, and US coastal policy in general
- Impacts of climate change (esp. heat) on human health
- Relevant work focuses on heat-related mortality in California metropolitan areas
- Society’s ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change
- Relevant work focuses on assessing the coping capacity of various resource sectors in California
and the U.S. Northeast
as well as historical experience of how states and communities respond to hazards
- Effective communication of climate change
- Relevant work focuses on Americans’ perceptions of and attitudes toward global warming, strategies to improve climate change communication, the role of climate contrarians
- The use of science in decision- and policy-making
- Relevant work focuses on stakeholder involvement in assessments and decision-making (e.g., in the First U.S. National Assessment, and various resource management contexts); decision-making under uncertainty; the willful misuse or neglect of science in policy-making
