Current Projects
- North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program NARCCAP is an international program that will serve the high resolution climate scenario needs of both the United States and Canada, using regional climate model, coupled global climate model, and time-slice experiments.
- The NCAR Climate and Weather Impact Assessment Science Initiative focuses on critical scientific gaps in the weather and climate arenas that have proved particularly challenging for decision-makers and scientists alike: 1) characterizing uncertainty ; 2) extreme weather and climate events ; and 3) the role of climate in human health.
- Linda Mearns is a member of the IPCC Task Group on Scenarios for Climate Impact Assessment, and was co-convening Lead Author for the chapter on Climate Scenario Development in IPCC Working Group I for the IPCC Third Assessment Report (2001), and a Lead Author on two other chapters in Working Groups I and II: one on Regional Projections of Climatic Change and the other in WGII on Scenarios.
- Land Cover Forcing from SRES Scenarios in Climate Models, a project that started to extend future climate change scenarios to include human impacts on land cover and soils.
- Analysis of Effects of Changes in Climatic Variability on Managed Ecosystems (crop modeling studies).
- Development of interdisciplinary programs combining climate model analysis, climate change scenario formation and impacts on agriculture and forests (collaborations with University of Nebraska, GISS, Penn State, U.S. Carolina Forestry and others).
- Southeast Agricultural Project, an agricultural assessment to quantify uncertainties due to varying spatial scales of climate scenarios.
- Methods and Models for Integrated Assessment (MMIA), focuses on formally quantifying uncertainties in spatial agricultural assessments based on data set sources and various methods of spatial scaling of the data sets.
- Climate change scenarios including extreme events and downscaling for the Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC) project at the University of Colorado.
