Climate Change Communication: An International Conference
Where: Ontario Canada
When: 22-24 June 2000
Climate Change Communication: An International Conference will be held 22-24 June 2000 in Ontario Canada. The conference will provide the opportunity to: profile climate change outreach initiatives; probe the role of communication in climate change perceptions and knowledge; examine the effectiveness of different tools in raising awareness of climate change; explore the barriers that hinder effective climate change communication and action; provide an opportunity for outreach with the host community. Session topics include: climate change perceptions; national and regional communication strategies; communication and the science-policy interface; impacts and adaptation to climate change; communication of natural variability and extremes; and communicating science to non-scientists.
This activity is relevant to communicating about extreme events such as those associated
with ENSO's extremes.

Impacts of Climatic Variations on Water Resources: A Focus on Borders in the Americas
Where: Santa Barbara, California
When: 16-20 July 2000
Impacts of Climatic Variations on Water Resources: A Focus on Borders in the Americas will be held 16-20 July 2000 in Santa Barbara, California. The conference objectives are: to contribute to national and international efforts to foster interdisciplinary analysis of physical aspects of the water cycle in the context of regional water resource management; to enhance understanding of the interactions between climate, society, and the environment in the context of water resource management; and to identify where and how recent advances in understanding of large-scale climate dynamics can be usefully applied to water resource management in boundary contexts. Major themes include: climate variability as context for water management across boundaries; and expanding the use of climate forecasts in management of water resources. International Conference on Climate and Health in Small Island States
Where: Nadi, Fiji
When: 24-25 July 2000
The International Conference on Climate and Health in Small Island States will be held 24-25 July 2000 in Nadi, Fiji. The 2-day conference will consists of formal case presentations of research on health or related impacts of climate variability and change. The conference is open to everyone and is free of charge. Goals of the conference include: inform health scientists, practitioners, and officials of the impacts of climate variability and long-term climate change in the Pacific islands region; integrate health-relevant sectors; introduce strategies in coastal zone management as they relate to sewage disposal and other health issues; foster joint interdisciplinary research projects among local participants, as well as developed/developing nation scientist partnerships. Contact Dr. H. Ogawa at the World Health Organization (WHO), Regional Office for the Western Pacific, PO Box 2932, 1000 Manila, Philippines; fax: 632-521-1036 or 632-526-0279; email: ogawah@who.org.ph.

Austrian Human Dimensions Program (HDP-A) Workshop "Socio-Economics of Climate Change in Alpine Regions: Impact and Mitigation"
Where: Innsbruck, Austria
When: 19-20 October 2000
The Austrian Human Dimensions Program (HDP-A) Workshop "Socio-Economics of Climate Change in Alpine Regions: Impact and Mitigation" will be held 19-20 October 2000 at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The conference seeks to foster a trans-disciplinary discussion among ecologists, economists and other social scientists to answer two types of questions: (i) how does mankind adopt to climate change, and (ii) what are the human contributions to climate change? The first question focuses on the impact of climate change on society. With respect to the second question, the Alpine population faces a dilemma: on the one hand, non-sustainable patterns of land use (tourism, agriculture, etc.) constitute their basis for living, and on the other hand, these forms of living contribute to climate change. The task is to identify current problem areas and find ways to resolve them with special focus on Alpine regions. For more information, contact Birgit Friedl, Austrian Human Dimensions Programme (HDP-A), Dept. of Economics, University of Graz, Universitaestrasse 15, A-8010 Graz, Austria; tel: 43-316-380-7112; fax: 43-316-380-9520; email: hdgec@kfunigraz.ac.at; Web site at www35.kfunigraz.ac.at/vwlwww/HDP/
