Fourth International Conference on Modeling of Global Climate Change and Variability

Where: Hamburg Germany
When: 13-16 September 1999

The Fourth International Conference on Modeling of Global Climate Change and Variability was held at the Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie 13-16 September 1999 in Hamburg Germany. More than 300 participants from 34 different countries attended this meeting that highlighted future challenges in global climate modeling. It also described the growing practical applications of such models in seasonal forecasting and the estimation of climate impacts. The four major sessions were: development and validation of comprehensive climate models and emerging issues; modeling of seasonal to interannual climate variability; modeling decadal to centennial climate variability; and prediction and detection of anthropogenic climate change. A number of papers dealt with the variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation and its relationship to other tropical and extra-tropical modes of variability, e.g., to the thermohaline circulation and the tropical Atlantic variability as well as its predictability. ENSO Impact on Water Resources in the Pacific Region Workshop

Where: Nadi, Fiji
When: 19-23 October 1999

The ENSO Impact on Water Resources in the Pacific Region Workshop was held 19-23 October 1999 in Nadi, Fiji. 80 participants from 23 countries attended. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce national water managers, disaster managers and meteorological services to the use of climate information and ENSO forecasting in developing response and mitigation plans with the objective of reducing the impact of future droughts in the Pacific region. The workshop included the following: introduction to ENSO cycles and climate impacts of ENSO events in the Pacific Islands; methods for conducting assessments of the impacts of storms and droughts associated with ENSO; an overview of ENSO forecast information currently available for the Pacific Islands; mehtods for using climate analysis to anticipate the timing and intensity of droughts associated with ENSO events; and procedures for developing ENSO response plans and long-term mitigation plans. The workshop demonstrated that climate analysis and climate forecasting have tremendous value for disaster response and mitigation planning and the management of water resources in Pacific countries and territories. The Impact of El Niño and La Niña on Southeast Asia

Where: Hanoi, Vietnam
When: 21-23 February 2000

The Impact of El Niño and La Niña on Southeast AsiaThe Impact of El Niño and La Niña on Southeast Asia was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, 21-23 February 2000. This workshop, organized by the recently established Indochina Global Change Network, was funded by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research and sponsored by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA). The workshop was held to assist the scientific communities of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and other nations in Southeast Asia, to help them strengthen the capacity of the region to respond effectively to the impact of ENSO events. The participants compiled a series of detailed recommendations for practical action to be taken promptly to strengthen the region's response capacity. A workshop report is available on line via Tiempo at www.cru.uea.ac.uk/tiempo/floor0/briefing/igcn/igcn2000.htm or write to Nguyen Huu Ninh, Coordinator, Indochina Global Change Network, A01, K40 Giangvo, Hanoi, Vietnam; tel/fax: 84-4-8515213; email: cered@hn.vnn.vn

Hurricanes Through Time: From Pre-Columbian Beliefs in the Caribbean to Modern Scientific Discovery

Where: Washington, DC
When: 18 February 2000

Hurricanes Through Time: From Pre-Columbian Beliefs in the Caribbean to Modern Scientific Discovery was held 18 February 2000 at the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives in Washington, DC. Given the known relationship between El Niño and La Niña and hurricane frequency in the tropical Atlantic, it is important for readers to know about this workshop and its presentations on such topics as hurricane vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean, the social consequences of hurricanes in the Caribbean, disaster diplomacy, and hurricane mapping in NASA's digital earth program, among others. A summary of the conference will be available soon. For more information about the workshop, please contact Laura Ortiz, Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, Smithsonian Institution, Arts and Industries Bldg., Suite 1465, 900 Jefferson Dr. SW, Washington, DC 20560-0448; tel: 1-202-357-1600; fax: 1-202-786-2477.

Pacific Islands Conference on Climate Change, Climate Variability and Sea Level Rise

Where: Rarotonga, Cook Islands
When: 3-7 April 2000

The Pacific Islands Conference on Climate Change, Climate Variability and Sea Level Rise was held 3-7 April 2000 in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The objectives of the conference were to: review the status of the science for monitoring climate change, climate variability and sea-level rise; improve and strengthen the linkages between climate science and policy development; identify and assess constraints to improved synergies between climate science and policy development; strengthen and enhance cooperation between regional and international organizations; gain government endorsement and support for a Regional Climate Change Project, 2000-2005; and develop a regional strategic framework on climate change actions. Innovative Policy Solutions to Global Climate Change

Where: Washington, DC
When: 25-26 April 2000

The Pew Center on Global Climate Change and the Royal Institute of International Affairs co-hosted an international conference on Innovative Policy Solutions to Global Climate Change 25-26 April 2000 in Washington, DC. Government officials, business executives, and individuals from non-governmental and academic communities gathered to discuss progressive yet pragmatic solutions to climate change being undertaken in industrialized countries.
