| Abstract | Over the past decade GIS has been used for data integration, analysis and decision-making in many societal sectors and academic disciplines. Geographic information science and technology however have evolved from the requirements of a GIS community which until recently did not include atmospheric scientists. Since 2001, Olga Wilhelmi have been a principal investigator of the NCAR GIS Strategic Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort to foster collaborative science, spatial data interoperability, and knowledge sharing. GIS Initiative aims to promote and support the use of GIS as both an analysis and an infrastructure tool in atmospheric research and to address broader issues of data management and geoinformatics within the geosciences. |

| "Because the pathway to sustainability cannot be
charted in advance, it will have to be navigated through trial and error and conscious experimentation. The urgent need is to
design strategies and institutions that can better integrate incomplete knowledge with experimental action into programs of
adaptive management and social learning." |
