Title Forum on Colorado Cities and Regions
Type Workshop
Abstract The Forum on Colorado Cities and Regions, organized by Robert Harriss, was held on 5 August 2002 at NCAR in Boulder, Colorado. This Forum brought together leading experts in emerging technologies for mapping and analyzing patterns of urban growth. Speakers illustrated exciting new applications of these technologies to mapping and analysis of wildfire risk at the urban-wildland interface, cities and surrounding biodiversity patterns, comprehensive city planning, and collaborative problem solving and conflict resolution. The forum is part of a multiyear initiative headed by Harriss, that will: 1) examine the interactions of various factors that influence atmospheric gas and particle emissions from cities; (2) propose new modeling and measuring techniques; and (3) examine ways to design and plan sustainable urban environments.

Research Themes

"Because the pathway to sustainability cannot be charted in advance, it will have to be navigated through trial and error and conscious experimentation. The urgent need is to design strategies and institutions that can better integrate incomplete knowledge with experimental action into programs of adaptive management and social learning."
