Title GIS in Weather, Climate, and Impacts Workshop 2002
Type Workshop
Abstract The GIS in Weather, Climate and Impacts workshop was held on 12-14 August 2002 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. The workshop was organized by Olga Wilhelmi of the NCAR Geographic Information System (GIS) Strategic Initiative. The goals of the workshops were: 1) to explore capabilities of GIS as an integrating tool for scientific research and applications at NCAR and in the geosciences community; 2) to provide a fostering mechanism for developing collaborations in interdisciplinary GIS-based studies and research areas in meteorology, climatology and related geo- and social sciences; and 3)to improve communication between the academic community, the private sector and government organizations in weather and climate GIS applications. A workshop report by Wilhelmi and workshop participant Jeffrey Brunskill (SUNY-Buffalo) summarizing the workshop's agenda and recommendations has been submitted to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS).

Research Themes

"Because the pathway to sustainability cannot be charted in advance, it will have to be navigated through trial and error and conscious experimentation. The urgent need is to design strategies and institutions that can better integrate incomplete knowledge with experimental action into programs of adaptive management and social learning."
