Background

I graduated from University of Guelph in 1995 with a major in International Development and a minor in Geography. My area of concentration in University was Africa. After University, I worked in South Korea for 1 year as a teacher at a private English Institute. This gave me the opportunity to travel around Asia and experience life in a completely different culture than where I grew up. I spent Christmas of 1996 in Vietnam traveling around the country by bus or motorcycle, then spend a couple weeks in China at the end of my year contract. While in South Korea I applied to a technical college in Ontario, Canada that specialized in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I was very fortunate to get accepted to the school as only 30 out of the 500 applicants got accepted. During my year at GIS school I learned much about computer programming, database management, CAD drafting, as well as, GIS analysis within a few specific GIS tools.

I started my career as a GIS Analyst in Idaho Falls, Idaho working for the Bureau of Land Management, BLM. This position introduced me to working with GIS in the natural resource sector. My main responsibilities were to assist and support the natural resource scientist within the GIS context. My following position was working for the GIS branch at Mesa County in Grand Junction, Colorado. This position gave me to opportunity to enhance my computer programming skills. I developed a few internet mapping applications for Mesa County. In 1999, I went to work for ESRI, a leading GIS software company in North America. I spent 3 ½ years instructing and consulting clients on the various GIS software they produce. And finally, my experience gained at ESRI led me to working at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as the GIS Coordinator.
